Acne

Acne is a common skin disease that can occur on many areas of the body and can develop at any age. Face acne is very common, but chest acne and back acne, as well as acne on the scalp, neck, shoulders, and upper arms is also ordinary. Likewise, although teen acne is common, acne can occur at any age. The good news is that with proper acne treatment and a good skin care regimen, it can be prevented and controlled.

What is Acne?

Acne occurs when the pores of the skin become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Acne lesions are commonly referred to as pimples. Excessive secretion of oils from the glands combines with naturally occurring bacteria and dead skin cells to block the hair follicles. Oil secretions build up beneath the blocked pore, providing a perfect environment for the skin bacteria to form the pimple.

What Causes Acne?

Sebaceous glands become more active during periods of elevated hormone activity. Other triggers of acne include improper skin care, food allergies and sensitivities, and vitamin imbalance. Acne can also be aggravated by climate, particularly heat and humidity (which promote bacterial development), irritants in personal care products, and also stress. Many myths claim that acne is caused by poor hygiene or diets consisting of chocolate or fried foods. These are just that – myths – and are completely untrue.

How to Get Rid of Acne?

Since there is no cure for acne, the best advice is to use an effective skin care regimen customized for your skin type. This can help to prevent and control acne breakouts. If you follow a strict acne treatment regimen, your acne treatment care can be extremely effective.

How Can I Prevent Acne?

The best means to prevent acne is to maintain a proper skin care regimen that includes regular use of masks and exfoliants. Masks are essential to clean pores while exfoliants will slough off dead skin cells resting on skin’s surface. Use products that will effectively control oil production, while maintaining a healthy level of hydration. Be careful to not over-dry the surface, as this can promote further acne from starting.

Should I Pop My Pimples?

No. When treating acne, it is important not to pick your pimples. Squeezing, picking at, or popping your pimples does nothing more than deposit and push more bacteria and oil into your pores. Aside from making your acne worse, it can damage your surrounding skin as well.

Types of Acne

Acne comes in many forms with many different names. Different types of acne include; whiteheads, blackheads, cystic acne, comedo, papule, pustule and macule. Below is a brief description of each form of acne.

Comedo
Whiteheads and blackheads are types of Comedo. Comedo is an oil producing follicle that gets filled with dirt, oil, tiny hairs, dead skin cells and bacteria which causes a zit to form. When the Comedo is open or larger, the oxydized dirt and oil create a black covering inside the pore which is why these are called blackheads. Whiteheads form in the same manner as blackheads, but instead of the pore being open, the pore is very narrow or closed causing the build up of infection under the skin. This leads the skin to become more inflamed, red and irritated causing your pimple to become white. Whiteheads should not be picked at. Doing so may lead to developing other complications such as staphylococci, streptococci and other skin bacteria.

Cystic Acne
One of the most painful forms of acne is Cystic Acne. Cystic acne forms below the skins surface. A build up of white blood cells, oils and fluids begin to build up causing red, raised and sometimes rather large bumps. Cystic acne is one of the most common acne issues that lead to acne scarring.

Papule
A small bump that appears on your skin, face mostly, that has a rough texture to the touch.

Pustule
Like cystic acne, pustules can be large and painful, but unlike cystic acne, this type of acne actually forms around the hair follicle. Proper care should be taken to allow the pustule to heal properly. Not popping them will help prevent acne scarring from occurring.

Macule
As acne begins to heal, it will form a red spot on the face with a well defined shape. This is called macule. Macules are not an uncommon site during the healing process, but it will look as if your skin is puffy and inflamed. Macule's are temporary and will disappear by themselves over a few days or even weeks. Picking the macules will also lead to acne scarring and even a new flair up of acne. This should be avoided as well.

How do I Treat Acne?

In order to effectively fight acne, one must first identify the nature of the blemish before applying a treatment. You should choose your acne treatment products based on the type of blemish that you are looking to treat.

Whiteheads

Whiteheads are pores clogged with oil (sebum). These blemishes appear raised on the surface of the skin and seem to have a “white” head. Because the whitehead is already raised above the skin, using a powerful topical drying agent, such as the Drying Lotion, is a fast and effective treatment for this kind of pimple. The formulation has drying, disinfecting, and soothing agents that will effectively heal the pimple and minimize the chance for re-infection.

Drying Lotion Drying Lotion
Our best selling Pimple Healer, Drying Lotion is an excellent Acne spot treatment made with a blend of Calamine and Salicylic Acid to clear up and soothe unsightly whiteheads overnight. A dab of this lotion will heal and dry pimples quickly.

Acne

When a pimple is red, underneath the surface of the skin, and tender to the touch, a topical drying cream will not effectively heal the blemish, because the infection is deeply embedded under the skin. For these deeper blemishes, the Buffering Lotion is an effective way to speed the healing process. A light, liquid antiseptic solution absorbs into the skin’s surface to attack the root of the infection under the skin. By avoiding unnecessary topical drying, acne scarring is minimalized.

Buffering Lotion Buffering Lotion
Specifically designed to treat deep, cystic blemishes. Sulfur based solution allows the lotion to be quickly absorbed into the skin, treating the source of the deeply rooted pimples. Excellent acne treatment containing Allantoin to calm and soothe inflammation and promote healing. Best when used before and after Drying Mask.

Buffering Lotion Cystic Acne
When a pimple is red, underneath the surface of the skin, and tender to the touch, a topical drying cream will not effectively heal the blemish, because the infection is deeply embedded under the skin. For these deeper blemishes, the Buffering Lotion is an effective way to speed the healing process. Drying Cream Sporadic Breakouts in Specific Oily Areas
Occasionally, areas of your face can become excessively oily due to over-active sebaceous glands, usually in the forehead and chin area. Due to this over-production of oils, small pimples can form in the area. These pimples are neither whiteheads nor cystic acne. Often they appear as little bumps under the skin. Our Drying Cream is a gentle topical drying agent that targets these small bumps. Because these bumps appear due to excessive oil production, the Drying Cream absorbs and disinfects the affected areas without being too abrasive to the delicate skin.

0.5oz. - $12.00
