Pregnancy Skin Care

During pregnancy, your body undergoes several changes, and so does your skin. Due to fluctuating hormone levels, your skin’s tone and texture can drastically change during the nine months and for some time afterward. It is important to be mindful of your skin and the products used in your regimen. If your skin type has changed be sure to re-evaluate your skincare regimen, and consult one of our skin care specialists to adjust your products accordingly.

What is Melasma

Melasma is more commonly referred to as the “pregnancy mask”. It appears as brown pigmentation around the eye and cheek area and, at times, above the lip. Those women with fair complexions are particularly susceptible to melasma, as is Asian skin.

Melasma occurs due to hormonal changes that affect the pigmentation in the skin, making it more susceptible to discoloration when exposed to sunlight.

The best way to ensure discoloration does not occur, is to use a moisturizer with a daily Sun Protection Factor. Our Solar Block Cream SPF 30 or our Suncare SPF 30 are both lightweight moisturizers that will protect the delicate skin.

Acne is quite common during pregnancy, due to the fluctuation of hormones. Most women experience cystic acne, for which the Buffering Lotion should be used. Whiteheads should be treated with our Drying Lotion. For more detailed information, please consult the Acne section.

Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are the most common skin problem affecting pregnant women. The skin is like a rubber band: as the pregnancy progresses, it pulls and stretches to accommodate the growth. However, if the skin stretches too quickly, and not enough collagen is present, the skin can tear and leave permanent stretch marks.

Like all skin problems, prevention is the most effective means of avoiding stretch marks. Muscle Oil is a uniquely formulated serum to be applied to all stretch-prone areas (ie: stomach, thighs, breasts, buttocks, etc). This serum is rich in Vitamins A, D & E, as well as other essential oils that help soften and hydrate skin, enhancing skin’s elasticity. Our Vitamin E Body Lotion partners well with the Muscle Oil in keeping skin supple and soft. Twice daily use reduces and helps prevent the appearance of stretch marks.
