stretch marks

Striae gravidarum, or stretch marks as they are more commonly known, will appear in 50-90 percent of all pregnant women due to the stretching of the skin most often in the sixth and seventh months. These marks appear as red or purple lines on the lower abdomen, breasts, buttocks, lower back and thighs. Stretch marks occur in the dermis, the middle layer of the skin that contains Elastin, the component that gives the skin its elasticity. These harmless marks on the skin can be lessened with preventative measures and proper care although nothing can actually prevent them from occurring 100 percent.
WILL I GET STRETCH MARKS?
Stretch marks are more likely to appear if you gain more weight than recommended during your pregnancy or weight is gained or lost rapidly. You are more likely to get stretch marks if your mother or sister had them. African American women are less likely to get stretch marks than Caucasian or Asian women. If you have stretch marks from a previous pregnancy, you can expect a darkening or an extension of the old marks.
WHAT CAN I DO TO PREVENT STRETCH MARKS?
Keep your body well hydrated. Healthy, hydrated skin stretches better. Avoid caffeine which can increase the likelihood of getting stretch marks. Consume foods that promote good skin health like fruits and vegetables for Vitamins A and C, nuts for zinc and lean meats and fish for protein. Using a body brush or cloth to gently exfoliate the areas of possible stretching improves circulation which may help. Keeping the skin moisturized at all times will make the stretching more comfortable and less itchy. Age, skin tone and diet all factor into whether or not you will get stretch marks and to what degree.

CAN I MAKE MY STRETCH MARKS DISAPPEAR?
Stretch marks will fade to a white or silvery color over time but may not disappear entirely. There are surgical methods available such as laser, chemical peels and dermabrasion for those who wish to reduce stretch marks more significantly. As a tip for camouflaging the stretch marks, apply our Self Tanning Lotion directly on the white or silver marks with a cotton swab so they darken slightly. Then apply to the overall area to blend the color.
