Q. If my foundation gives me sun protection, do I need a moisturizer with SPF?
A. Probably not. If your foundation has an SPF of 15 or higher, and you’re applying it all over, it’s likely that you won’t need to use both. What happens if you apply both products? Not much, really. SPF is not cumulative, so if your foundation has an SPF of 30, and your moisturizer has an SPF of 17, you’re still getting the protection of SPF 30, not 47.
However, keep in mind that sunscreen needs to cover the skin completely to work. If you’re applying just the tiniest bit of foundation, you’ll still need to use a moisturizer with broad spectrum sun protection first to ensure that the skin is covered.
Remember that like goes with like: if your foundation is water-based, your moisturizer should be too. Try the Oil Free Moisturizer SPF 30. Makeup artists are partial to The Moisture Magnet SPF 15 for oil-based makeup.
