How to care for your lips

VERTICAL LINES AND THINNING AROUND THE LIPS

The breakdown of collagen in the lips and years of facial activity can cause vertical lines and thinning around the lips that concern many women. These lines extend down into the lips and cause lipstick to bleed into the lines. Smokers may find this process increased since the puckering position of the lips is repeated thousands of times over the years as well as the exposure to free radicals which cause a deterioration of collagen in the skin. Some tips to minimize the appearance of vertical lines around the lips:

  • Keeping the lips and surrounding skin protected from the sun and continuously moisturized will improve the look of the lips.
  • Filling the area around the lips with a lipstick primer helps keep lipstick in place longer. Apply a neutral, lip-colored liner just outside the natural lip line to create a fuller effect. Do not attempt to draw on a larger lip.
  • Using neutral or light colored lipsticks and gloss create a fuller effect. Very dark colors draw attention to thin lips and lipstick bleeding will be more noticeable.
  • Abstaining from smoking and excessive sun exposure will prevent further damage.
  • Use a serum containing exfoliating alpha hydroxy acids daily to soften the look of the lines.

Massage a few drops around lips daily or nightly to soften the look of vertical lines. Hyaluronic Acid locks in moisture for soft lips and alpha hydroxy acids smooth away fine lines.

LIP GLOSS AND LIPSTICK PLUMPERS-DO THEY REALLY WORK?

Lips thin out as we age due to the loss of fat and collagen. For those of us who do not wish to go the route of injectable fillers and cosmetic surgery, there is a wide variety of lip plumping glosses and lipsticks available that claim to plump up lips. The truth is the menthol and camphor ingredients used to create the “plump” effect are merely mild irritants that cause the lips to swell slightly, creating a fuller effect and a diminished effect on fine lines. The effects are temporary and not harmful, though they may be mildly drying and irritating if overused.

NASOLABIAL FOLDS

Nasolabial folds are the creases that form from the sides of the nose, outward around the mouth that seem to get deeper as we age. These develop due to gravity and volume loss on the face. Repeated smiling and facial expressions deepen these folds over time. Aside from injectable fillers and cosmetic surgery, there are a few things we can do to minimize the look of these lines.

  • Minimize sun exposure and wear moisturizers and make-up that contain at least an SPF 15.
  • Use serums containing collagen and moisture retaining ingredients to keep skin looking plump and moist.
  • Abstain from smoking as it exposes skin to free radicals that speed up the breakdown of collagen.
  • Use foundations and make-up made for mature skin as they contain ingredients to prevent the product from settling into these lines.

CHAPPED LIPS

Exposure to cold, dry air and repeatedly licking your lips can cause them to become chapped and cracked. Certain enzymes in saliva can irritate lips while the evaporating water in saliva adds to the moisture loss. Beware of lip balms containing phenols and camphor. If you seem to be reaching for your lip balm all day long or you feel “addicted,” then you may be suffering from the drying effects of these ingredients on your lips. They actually remove the protective layer of your lips making matters worse rather than better, increasing the need to apply more often. Chapped lips can also be a sign of dehydration or a symptom of anemia. If your chapped lips are associated with swelling or blistering, you should consult a doctor since these may be signs of something more serious like an infection.

  • Use a moisturizing lip balm containing aloe, petroleum and other soothing botanicals, not ingredients that in the long run do the opposite like camphor.
  • Use a humidifier in dry climates.
  • Rub lips with a dry toothbrush to exfoliate any dry skin before applying balm.
  • Use a thick, rich lip treatment every night before bed.
  • Always use an SPF lip balm when exposed to the sun.
  • Avoid licking the lips which dries out lips even more.
  • Avoid acidic beverages like orange juice when lips are cracked and chapped as they irritate the delicate skin.
