Admit it—whether you’re watching the Oscars or flipping through the pages of US Weekly magazine, perhaps you get a tinge of jealousy as you gander at celebrities who have enviably glowing skin. Trust me, you’re not the only one yearning for beautiful celebrity skin. I’ve often thought to myself how do celebrities achieve and maintain such perfect skin? Before I became an esthetician, I always attributed their flawless faces to an uber-talented makeup artist who applied some exquisite foundation with a magic wand (a.k.a. makeup brush).
When I started learning about skin care, I began to discover that a particular actress’s dewy glow or a certain singer’s ageless skin had very little to do with cosmetics. Aside from good genes (and yes, a good makeup artist), their good skin was mostly contingent on a good diet and good skin care. You can slather on the most prestigious makeup in the world, but if your skin isn’t healthy, you won’t have that glow.
Keep reading to get simple (they’re really simple!) tips on how to achieve the red carpet-worthy glow that you’ve always coveted.
Get Your Zs That’s right—they don’t call it beauty sleep for nothin’. I don’t know about you, but when I get good night’s rest, I look pretty darn good the following day. But when I don’t get enough sleep, I may as well put a paper bag over my head. An adequate amount of sleep prevents under-eye bags and dark circles, so aim to get at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night.
Diet & Exercise As simple and cliché as this sounds, a balanced diet rich in antioxidants (think blueberries, spinach, citrus fruits) and good fats (i.e. salmon, walnuts, avocados) is highly conducive to a glowing, supple-looking appearance. Likewise, experimenting with yo-yo or fad diets or downright starving yourself deprives the body of vital nutrients the body needs, which can lead to dull, older-looking, lackluster skin. Drinking plenty of water and limiting caffeine and alcohol will prevent dehydrated skin. What you put in is what you get out. Daily exercise such as walking for 30 minutes a day will boost blood circulation, thereby imparting a healthy glow to your skin. Moreover, many celebs take their vitamins religiously—typically a multi vitamin along with fish oil or a flaxseed oil supplement (and more than likely other vitamins as well). Check with your physician first before you take any kind of vitamin or start a new diet.
