There’s no disputing the health hazards of smoking, but can this dangerous habit cause visible aging AND acne, too?
Surely you’ve heard that smoking can lead to cancer, brain and lung damage, yellow skin and nails, mutated DNA, a weakened immune system, and pregnancy complications—not to mention premature aging. It’s been said that smoking even just one pack per week increases your chances of wrinkles by about five times. Don’t believe me? Take a look at this photo of twins and see how easy it is to spot the smoker versus the non-smoker. Those fun facts aside, new research has shown that smokers may have a greater chance of developing acne, too.
While some reported only increased pore blockage, those who smoke 15 or more cigarettes per day were found to have more intense breakouts, deeming the acne associated with smoking as “smoker’s acne.
It’s estimated that 17 million people in the United States have experienced some form of acne. Everyone from children and teens to adults can suffer from this skin condition, which may be worsened by smoking. We know we can’t make you quit—you’ll do it when you’re ready—but here are a few more reasons to cut out this dangerous addiction. Smoking:
- Encourages free radical damage that causes visible aging, including fine lines and wrinkles.
- Depletes collagen in skin.
- Thins the skin.
- Alters the body’s appearance by upsetting natural hormone balances. As such, smokers tend to have thinner legs and pot bellies.
- Affects dental health, causing increased risk of gum disease and tooth loss as well as yellow teeth and bad breath.
- May cause yellowed fingers.
