Self-Confidence & Teen Acne

Many adults look back on their experiences with teen acne as traumatizing. At a time when we are at our most vulnerable and we are changing in every way possible, dealing with teen acne can cause us to battle with self-confidence.

Take comfort in knowing that you are not the only one facing acne. We all do: it’s not just limited to teens: younger and older adults also suffer from breakouts.

So breathe. Relax. It won’t do you any good to worry constantly about how your skin looks or how others perceive you; the additional anxiety and tension will only add to the stress your skin already feels. Be gentle, be patient, but most of all, be kind to yourself and to your skin. Your face should be a hands-off zone: touching it out of habit will only transfer bacteria from hands to any infected areas, thereby causing more breakouts. Don’t pick or prod at erupted areas either; doing so may cause permanent scarring.

Here’s the bottom line: just let your skin be.

Give your skin a much needed and deserved break and simply focus on skin care. Find a cleanser that rids the surface of any dirt, excess oil, and makeup without stripping it of its moisture. Few recognize the significance of including a toner in their regimen, but a good toner gives the skin a final and thorough clean. Additional ingredients such aloe, chamomile or witch hazel will calm and soothe any irritation.

It's extremely important to choose the right oil-free moisturizer. One of the most common misconceptions is that it's okay to skimp in that department: keep in mind, however, that oily skin is not necessarily hydrated skin. Find a product that is lightweight, easily absorbed and keeps your skin moisturized throughout the day. Not only will it act as a protective barrier from the external environment – an environment which may further irritate acne-prone skin – but will also help prevent the production of excess oil.

Never hesitate to consult a professional for help: our estheticians at the salon and offices are always here to help answer answer questions or put together a regimen. Don't know where to start? Take our skincare questionnaire or call 800-BADESCU for tips and tricks!
