"I love the Enzyme cleansing gel as a face wash, however two weeks ago I used it as a 10 minute mask, as suggested on the website, and I experienced a chemical irritation that lasted about a week on my cheeks. I also used the vitamin c serum and oil free moisturizer with sunscreen after the mask so perhaps it was too much. My skin is better now. It would be helpful for the website to emphasize that this gel works as an AHA, to help people be cautious about how they use the gel and what to use with it to maximize skin benefits."

Q&A

Is this good for combination acne prone skin? I currently alternate between your Glycolic face wash and your anti acne face wash. Would this face wash be a better choice than either of the 2 I currently use? Not sure if this matters in regard to my question but I also also use MB drying cream and anti acne serum.

Thanks for your question! Mario Badescu uses very minimal, safe levels of parabens in order to combat mold and bacteria in some products. We base these levels on research by two independent scientific bodies, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review panel of experts in the US and the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Products Safety. Both bodies have established safe use levels for parabens in cosmetics. Paraben use in our products is well below the safe levels established, and is used in minor amounts for product preservation.
Does this product work as make-up removal?
Thanks for your question. The Enzyme Cleansing Gel will remove light makeup. For a thorough removal of makeup, we recommend a double cleansing. Our Cleansing Oil followed by Gentle Foaming Cleanser is the perfect tag team for the job!
Why does the Environmental Working Group (EWG) have this product rated poorly? Are the chemicals in this product safe?
Thanks for your question! All raw materials used in Mario Badescu products are completely safe and follow all regulatory limits and guidelines. EWG ranks their score based on an individual ingredient being 100% of the formula and then the average is taken. For example, even though ingredient XYZ is under 0.1% of a formula, EWG will rank it the same as ingredients that are over 1%.
Can I use this product while also using retinol products?
Thanks for your question. The Enzyme Cleansing Gel is a gentle cleanser. We do recommend patch testing your skin's tolerance for the combination of the 2 products.
